SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural Development)

At Harewood Nursery School, we place SMSC at the core of our Early Years curriculum. We provide a wide range of experiences, opportunities, and provisions to nurture children’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural understanding. These experiences inspire children to reflect on the kind of people they want to become, the world they aim to help create, and the achievements they hope to accomplish.

What is SMSC?

SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural Development.

Spiritual: Exploring beliefs and experiences; respecting faiths, feelings, and values; enjoying self-discovery and learning about others and the world; using imagination and creativity; reflecting.

Moral: Recognising right and wrong; respecting the law; understanding consequences; exploring moral and ethical issues; forming reasoned opinions.

Social: Addressing moral issues; appreciating diverse perspectives; participating, volunteering, and cooperating; resolving conflicts; engaging with British democratic values.

Cultural: Valuing cultural influences; understanding Britain’s parliamentary system; participating in cultural opportunities; embracing, respecting, and celebrating diversity.

SMSC development serves as a comprehensive framework that supports children’s personal growth throughout the entire curriculum.

This is how we support and develop children's SMSC at Harewood Nursery School

British Values

We promote the fundamental British Values through our SMSC curriculum.

These Values are:

  • democracy,
  • the rule of law,
  • individual liberty,
  • and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
